SERVICES OF PARTICIPATION HOUSE

Supportive Housing

bell_laneParticipation House Brantford opened in June 1978 to provide community living accommodation to severely physically disabled adults. Many of our residents had been inappropriately placed in large institutions , chronic care wards of hospitals, nursing homes, etc. Their biggest disability was not being physically disabled but in most cases environmentally disabled. To this end most of our energies have been put towards challenging our residents to their fullest potential, integrating them spiritually, emotionally and physically back into our community.

Programs available to residents a Participation House include: Life Skills, academic upgrading, communication (including Blissymbolics), occupational therapy, sports, recreation and leisure activities, general hygiene and self care, computer training, community involvement, volunteer and employment experience.

The West Street Centre Apartments

west-streetThe Participation House Brantford Community Living Project (also known as “The West Street Centre Apartments”) is comprised of 17 one bedroom apartments which have been totally adapted to meet the needs of the physically disabled tenants (chair high appliances, counters, spacious washrooms with wheel in showers etc.)

The building itself is on the fringe of the downtown core within walking/wheeling distance of most amenities.

Rent subsidies are available from the Brant Housing Authority.

Support Care Staff are on site 24 hours per/day funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Division. Assistance is provided on an as requested basis under the direction of the tenant in all areas of daily living except medical, which are met by the V.O.N. Scheduling is kept to a minimum to promote independence.

Attendant Outreach

The Community Outreach Attendant Care Program began in 1988 to help meet the needs of the physically disabled in the community. The program provides attendant care services to disabled adults so that they may continue to live independently in the community.
